ABSTRACT

This website focuses on ritual practices of self-mortification in the Philippines. I will be using two specific rituals to explain how the Filipino variant of Catholicism expresses indigenous values and interpretations of the religion while fully incorporating colonial influences. The focus on the torture and death of Christ partially resulted from unique local translations of the story of Christ’s passion, and also elements of pre-Spanish animist and shamanic practices that have persevered throughout the centuries. A brief examination of the Amang Hinulid cult will provide some socio-cultural context in which to place the two rituals of self-mortification that I will primarily explore.
